Batteries for solar energy storage are designed to make sure a well functioning system can provide power long after the sun has gone down. Making certain the right batteries for the job are used can have a big impact on the overall efficiency and cost-effectiveness of a solar system.

There are a number of different kinds of batteries for solar storage that are used. The best one to select really depends on manufacturer recommendations for the system that has been put in place. In general, batteries that will work for solar storage include:

  • Basic marine or RV batteries - This type of affordable battery can work well with small systems, but it is not recommended for most. These batteries, however, are not effective over the long haul. Car batteries, by the way, are not considered usable because they tend to sustain damage too quickly.
  • Flooded - This type of lead/acid batteries is often made specifically for use as a solar energy storage device. These batteries should not be used indoors, however, because they release gas with use.
  • Gel - This type of battery, often commonly made for solar storage, is ideal for indoor use. Since this type of battery does not release gas, it can be a good choice in many cases.
  • Absorbed glass mat, or AGM - Many people find this type of battery the best for solar energy storage. It is created using a woven glass mat that is placed between plate. This type of battery is considered spill and leak proof and it does not give off gases as it charges.

Batteries for solar energy storage are vital if there is a desire to see this type of system run after the sun goes down for the night. While the exact battery to choose will depend on the type of solar system in place, there are choices available.
