SEGS in California: Catching the Heat of the Mojave!SEGS=Solar Energy Generating Systems. The Mojave desert is the hottest location in North America. The heat is sweltering and the land is barren. So, the modern and hip Californian government decided to be proactively green and put this hellish landscape to some excellent use. There are nine solar plants that produce a combined 354 megawatts (MW) of energy at SEGS. That's enough to power about 250,000 homes! A SEGS in California is the largest solar project on the planet - and it has big plans for further expansion! By the year 2011, SEGS in California will have developed the Mojave Solar Park. It will cover 9 square miles of desert and produce over 553 MW of energy - enough to power 400,000 homes. When completed, the Mojave Solar Park will help to provide power to homes in and around northern and central California. California's electric provision companies are fully committed to using renewable energy sources like solar, hydro and turbine power for 20% of the state's energy needs by 2010. The state of California has always been the leader for the United States in terms of experimental and alternative energy provision as well as healthy lifestyles in general. They also have a huge carbon footprint called LA that keeps them motivated to develop sustainable, eco-friendly energy sources. Even so, no other state expends so many resources as does California to remain proactive and encourage green living. The SEGS in California is the largest now, but will be dwarfed in the future as solar technologies continue to be honed and perfected. One thing is sure, the future is going to be fueled by alternative energy sources and California will always be there leading the way!
