Solar Powered Water Bottles: Water from the Sun!

Hunger isn't the only problem that impoverished nations face. They are dying of thirst too. So much so that they drink from disease infested rivers, lakes and streams. When your thirst builds to certain point, you will drink any water that you can find - even if you know that it can possibly kill you. That's thirst. Solar water bottles heat water from the energy given to us by the Sun. It gets hot enough to kill many different water contaminants and be made safely drinkable.

Solar bottles:

• Have a good-sized capacity - about 4 liters;
• Are designed to be easily stackable for mass transit to impoverished zones;
• Are clear on one side and dark on the other;
• Have handles that double as stands for maximizing the Sun-gathering angle;
• Use heat and the irradiation of UV-A rays to purify water for drinking.

The concept of solar bottles is old - heat water to purify it. However, modern engineering standards and technology have made solar water bottles a very new idea. They are made of PET bottles that are modified to epitomize their usage. Some people fear that PET bottles are unhealthy, but they need to consider the alternatives of the people who are dying.

Some people say that these solar bottles should be made of safer glass so that the dangers of PET bottles are eliminated. It obviously doesn't make a lot of sense to use glass. It is heavy and can break. It's just not feasible from a viewpoint of helping 3rd world nations who are dying of thirst. There is also research and development ongoing to add a feature that tells when the water has reached the temperature necessary to have killed the microbes desired.

Either way, these solar bottles are one more way that people are becoming more and more green and using the power of the Sun to help solve worldwide problems!
