Transparent Thin Film Solar Cells - Aiming at Lowering Costs

Although they are not necessarily the most costly components in a solar energy system, the cells can add up to a rather big expense. The importance of cells, however, is not to be overlooked. Without a well-functioning cell design, a solar system would not be able to absorb energy from the sun. To make the prospect a little more affordable for the masses, transparent thin film solar cells are under development.

Transparent thin film research aims to lessen the amount of light absorbing material required for making a functional and efficient solar cell. This can, in turn, lessen the costs associated with creating solar cells. Although there is some concern about a reduction in energy conversion when thin film cells are used, the overall benefits of a more affordable design are worth noting. They include a potential for:
