Solar Cell Efficiency Can Impact Financial Savings

Putting in a solar energy system to save a household or business budget electric costs is a very smart idea. To gain the maximum benefits of this move, however, it is important that solar cell efficiency be high. If a system doesn't operate as it should, the need for fossil-fuel driven electricity is likely to remain strong.

What is meant by solar cell efficiency and how can home and business owners be certain they have it? On the surface, cell efficiency involves nothing more than how well a solar panel happens to capture the sun's power. Highly efficient cells will produce more energy than substandard designs. There are more factors, however, that impact the process than many people realize. These include such things as:

  • The thermodynamic efficiency limit - Solar panels are devices that convert quantum energy. Considering this, they are subject to a thermodynamic efficiency limit. This means that photons that have an energy that falls below the band gap of the particular absorber used in the panel will not convert themselves to useful energy. This is due to the fact they cannot create a hole-electron pair.
  • Quantum efficiency - This refers to the phenomena that makes some electron hole pairs recombine and become useless for the production of electricity. The quantum efficiency level involves the percentage of photons that actually do contribute to final electrical current output.

Solar Cell Efficiency throughout the years

There a number of other factors that can impact actual solar cell efficiency. To make certain a home or commercial system operates as it should, buyers should be concerned not only with the solar cells, but also the inverters. These are the devices that turn solar energy into usable electrical power. The more efficient the cells and solar inverters are, the more usable electric energy is likely to result from a system's use.

Going with solar power is an excellent way to offset electrical costs. This proposition is, however, rather dependant on efficiency. When solar cell efficiency is high and conversions work as they should, the offset can be worth a small fortune in saved electric costs.
