Solving Energy Needs in Developing Nations: Solar Power for the Poor

The sun is capable of meeting the energy needs of every application on the planet and yet at this time only a small amount of our energy is supplied by the sun. As people become aware of the problems involved in burning fossil fuels, both to the economy and the environment, solar power is finally getting some of the attention it deserves. One problem that has persisted and inhibited the use of solar energy is the cost of the equipment. Many individuals and businesses are not able to afford the capital costs of installation. However, the costs are beginning to decrease with the development of new technology. If costs can be reduced significantly, a solution for over a billion people living without electricity may be found.

India is a prime example of a country with many rural areas that do not have access to electricity. Many deaths occur because of the poor quality of indoor air based on the fuels and materials burned for the purpose of lighting, cooking, and heating. The development of low cost solar products may change this. Inexpensive solar cells must be developed that do not rely on silicon. As governments promote the implementation of new technology with incentives and grants and more countries join in the race to produce inexpensive solar collecting devices, the chances of bringing electricity to the poor increases. Solar energy is being targeted as a solution for people who live far from electrical grids. Since remote systems are very practical and are already used for industrial and government purposes, they are ideal for bringing electricity to remote villages and rural areas in places like India and parts of Africa. There is a movement promoting this idea and spreading information and plans on how to bring solar power for poorer people into existence.
